Brackish water membranes treat lower-salinity feed water, typically up to roughly 10,000 to 15,000 ppm TDS, and operate at lower pressure. Seawater membranes are built for feed water of roughly 30,000 to 45,000 ppm TDS and operate at much higher pressure. Using the wrong type gives poor rejection or damages the membrane, so choose by your feed water salinity.

The first two digits are the diameter in inches and the last two are the length in inches. An 8040 element is 8 inches in diameter and 40 inches long, and a 4040 element is 4 inches by 40 inches. The size must match your pressure vessel.

Membranes commonly last about 3 to 5 years, but life depends on feed water quality, pretreatment, operating pressure, cleaning routine and how often the plant is shut down. Poor pretreatment shortens membrane life considerably.

As a general guide, clean the membranes when normalized permeate flow drops by about 10 percent, salt passage rises by about 5 to 10 percent, or the pressure drop across the stage rises by about 10 to 15 percent. Replace them when cleaning no longer restores performance or permeate quality stays out of specification.

Membranes of the same standard size, such as 8040, fit the same pressure vessels, so FilmTec, Hydranautics and LG elements can often replace each other. Compare the datasheets for flow, salt rejection and operating pressure, and avoid mixing different brands or models inside the same vessel. Our team can suggest a suitable equivalent.

Keep the element in its original sealed packaging in a cool place away from direct sunlight and freezing temperatures. Once a membrane has been wetted, it must not be allowed to dry out.

An FRP vessel is a fiberglass tank that holds filter media, such as sand, carbon or softener resin, and runs at moderate pressure. An RO pressure vessel holds the RO membrane elements and is built for much higher pressure, from brackish water systems up to seawater systems. They are not interchangeable.

Size the vessel from your design flow rate and the filtration velocity recommended for the media. Higher flow needs a larger diameter, and the height depends on the amount of media required. Send us your flow rate and application and we will recommend a size.

Bag filters handle higher flows and heavier dirt loads and are used for coarse pre-filtration. Cartridge filters give finer, more precise filtration and are commonly used as the final guard filter before RO membranes or dosing equipment.

Most RO systems use a 5 micron cartridge filter just before the high-pressure pump. Use a finer rating, such as 1 micron, for cleaner product water, and a coarser rating, such as 20 or 50 micron, for pre-filtration of dirtier water. We supply 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 micron cartridges.

A Clack control valve automates the service, backwash, rinse and regeneration cycles of water softeners and filters such as multimedia and carbon filters. We supply the WS1, WS1.5 and WS2 ranges, and the right model depends on the vessel size and flow rate.

A softener removes hardness (calcium and magnesium) to prevent scale, but it does not remove other dissolved salts. An RO system removes most dissolved salts, giving low-TDS water. They are often used together, with the softener protecting the RO membranes from scale.

Pretreatment depends on your feed water analysis, but it typically includes media filtration to remove suspended solids, activated carbon to remove chlorine, a softener or antiscalant dosing to control scale, and a cartridge filter. Chlorine damages polyamide RO membranes, so it must be removed before the membranes.

A dosing pump injects chemicals in precise amounts, such as antiscalant to prevent scaling, disinfectant, dechlorination chemicals and pH adjustment chemicals. Accurate dosing protects the membranes and keeps the plant stable. We supply dosing pumps together with dosing tanks.

Sizing starts with your feed water analysis, the permeate flow you need per day, the water temperature and the target recovery. RO capacity is quoted in GPD or cubic meters per day, and 1 cubic meter per day is about 264 GPD. Share these details and our team will recommend a system.

A water analysis showing TDS, hardness, pH, chlorine, iron, turbidity, temperature and, for RO feed, the silt density index (SDI) lets us select the right filters, softener, membranes and chemicals. We can also help assess your water.

Track permeate and feed conductivity or TDS, permeate and concentrate flow, and pressure across each stage. We supply TDS and conductivity monitors, pH and ORP controllers, and line-type and panel-type flow meters for this purpose.
